Negative taken for February 11, 1962, Arkansas Gazette article "A Report on Historic Pea Ridge Park," F5:2. The Pea Ridge National Military Park under redevelopment and building completion after becoming a part of the National Park Service in 1960. The Elkhorn Tavern is located in the Pea Ridge National Military Park. Prior to the Civil War, the Elkhorn Tavern was operated as an inn along the Butterfield Overland Mail Route by the J.C. Cox family and also served as a voting place, post office and Place of Worship. During the Civil War the Elkhorn Tavern was used as a hospital by both sides, and a headquarter for the Union forces in the area.
